Charlotte Angas Scott's Portrait

Charlotte Angas Scott (1858-1931) was the first mathematician who taught at the women's college Bryn Mawr in the United States. This Pennsylvania college was the first to offer free university education to women, thus helping many girls to enter the field of mathematics.

One of Charlotte's most important publications was Cartesian Plane Geometry: Analytical Conics.

A conic section is the intersection of a cone and a plane.

Conical curves

1.If an isosceles triangle is rotated around the height corresponding to the unequal side, it creates a cone. What do the following figures create when they rotate?

Cone of revolution

a)

Sphere of revolution

b)

2. Calculate the volume of each one using the following data:

  1. Radius of the cone base r = 3 cm; height h = 8 cm
  2. Radius of circumference r = 4 cm
  3. Base of the rectangle a = 3 cm; height b = 6 cm
