Observations and context

In the 1970s, a new feminist wave began to flourish, affecting the theoretical and university sphere as well as the art movement.

Miriam Schapiro creates the femmage category, a collage style that uses materials, objects and craft techniques culturally identified with women.

Judy Chicago creates The Dinner Party, a ceremonial table. On each side of the triangular table there are 13 porcelain place settings, embroidered tablecloths and the names of the 39 guests, including Sappho, Aspasia, Theodora and Hypatia. On the white tiles under the table, the names of 999 other women are inscribed including Erinna, Cleobulina, Theano, Julia Domna, Clodia, an many other Greek and Roman women.

Eleanor Antin also dynamites, with fine irony, the idealised constructions of feminity in the collective imagination that the classical world has transferred to our days.

His photograph Judgment of Paris (after Rubens) - Dark Helen - is part of a work from the series Helen's Odyssey, from 2007. She has another version entitled Judgment of Paris (after Rubens) - Light Helen. The photograph was part of the major exhibition at the British Museum in London "Troy: Myth and Reality", held from 21-11-2019 to 08-03-2020.

Since 2001, he has completed three series of allegorical photographs based on Roman life: The Last Days of Pompeii, Roman Allegories and Helen's Odyssey.

The proposed activity will be done individually, students will be provided with an image of the author's photograph of The Judgement of Paris and, firstly, they will have to recognise the mythological chapter it represents and the characters that appear. Secondly, they will choose which role they identify with or which role they prefer to include in their lives and link them to famous women of the present day. Then, they will choose which woman role they identify with or which role they prefer to include in their lives and link them to famous women of the present day.

The activity has been assigned to 2nd of ESO, specifically related to content block "Continuity of cultural heritage. Mythology and religion".

Description

vUsing The Judgement of Paris by Eleanor Antin as a basis, we will work on the presence of classical culture today and the gender stereotypes that persist. We will establish a debate on gender stereotypes in ancient Greece, their survival today and the changes that have taken place.
