Read Sulpicia's text, a Roman poet from the 1st century AD, in Latin and Spanish and answer the syntactic questions based on it. (The questions refer to the Latin text, but the translation provides support).

XVI.

Gratum est, securus multum quod iam tibi de me
    permittis, subito ne male inepta cadam.
Sit tibi cura togae potior pressumque quasillo
    scortum quam Serui filia Sulpicia:
solliciti sunt pro nobis, quibus illa dolori est          5            
ne cedam ignoto maxima causa toro. 

«Está bonito lo que te permites, despreocupándote de mí,

seguro de que no voy a caer de repente como una tonta.

Sea tuya la preocupación por la toga y la pelleja que la lleva,

cargada con su cesto, antes que Sulpicia, la hija de Servio.

Por mí se preocupan quienes tienen como motivo máximo de cuita

que no vaya a acostarme con un cualquiera».

Observaciones y contexto

Sapho's poetry gave birth to a long list of women who, until the 4th century AD, were the first to use their voices in different styles, in Greek as well as in Latin. From Roman times, mentioning only the poets of whom minimum testimony remains, we find Sulpicia "the elegiac poetess", Melinno, Herennia Procula, Claudia Trophime, Sulpicia "the satirist", Julia Balbilla, Caecilia Trebulla, Damo, Terentia, Theosebia and Aconia Fabia Paulina.

 

The four syntax activities regarding the Elegies 14, 16, 17 and 18 can be worked in an independent way or together in a session consisting of four interactive groups aiming to review the syntax. The sequencing for a 55-minute class would be the following:

5’. Explaining the session.

40’. Each activity will take 10 minutes, the fragment will be read in Latin and in Spanish and students will answer the questions. 

10’. Any syntactic questions which could have arisen will be asked to the whole group and suggestions for improvement of the activities can be made.

 

The activity is aimed at students of Latin in 4th of ESO, which is the subject where the block of syntax is implemented.
