Informació de l'obra i context de creació

Juratė Stauskaitė’s paintings add to peculiarly transformed features of expressionism found in creations of such prominent Lithuanian female expressionist painters of the 20th and 21st centuries as Černė Percikovičiūtė, Rūta Katiliūtė and Aušra Barzdukaitė-Vaitkūnienė. Expressionism in Lithuania is characterized by emotional tensions (often conveying anxiety or sadness) and expressive painting or carvings, its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas.

The arsenal of Juratė Stauskaitė’s means of expression is extremely minimal, often only a monochrome line and a stain. Color appears infrequently, and only as a complementary element. The plot element is ignored, and there are no space or time parameters. The main means of expression is a thin, sensitive but firmly drawn line and a large white sheet space. Creative thought develops in series of etching or drawing, adding new nuances to them. The artist is very focused on herself and, without avoiding irony or self-irony, is able to suggestively “broadcast” her states to the viewer.

The dominant element of Stauskaitė's creative ideas is a figure. It is a bird (the bearer of dreams or misfortunes), a woman, or a semi-female bird. The latter character first appeared in the etching cycle White Bird Throws a Black Feather (1983). Herein, deformation of the elongated or reduced limbs only enhances the emotion conveyed. With the movements of a compressed, strongly deformed figure, the artist seems to give meaning to the struggle between spirit and matter, reaching beyond limitations of personality and opportunity. The figure of a woman in Stauskaitė's works is usually naked – this way she becomes more fragile, more sensitive, more vulnerable. Standing, kneeling, falling, or reclining figures radiate a sense of boundless loneliness, a need for care and tenderness, appear to be ephemeral, yet at the same time earthly, sensual, and erotic, this way the transparent contour of the drawing seems to materialize and gains weight and sculptural scope.
