Observacions i context

Hildegard of Bingen embodies a tradition of women throughout history with extraordinary knowledge about the healing power of plants and their medicinal uses. Some of them, such as Marya Sybilla Meriam in the 17th century or Jane Colden in the 18th century, made exquisite illustrations of plants; in the case of Colden, with details of the different parts of the plant and its medicinal uses.

Hildegard was born and lived in the Holy Roman Empire (Germany).

She was strongly influenced by her teacher, the anchorite Jutta of Sponheim, and in turn passed on a similar model of mentorship and leadership to her disciples, among them the noblewoman Ricardis of Stade.

Hildegard von Bingen can also be considered a precedent for future great mystics such as St. Catherine of Siena or St. Teresa of Avila.

For its part, the twelfth century was singularly brilliant in female creation and among its contemporaries are the philosopher and abbess Eloise of Paraclete; Herrada of Landsberg; the great writer of the Lais, Mary of France; the Andalusian poets Hafsa al Rakuniyya or Nazhum ibn Al Qalai, among others; the troubadours like the Countess of Dia or Azalais of Porcairagues, among others; Anna Comnena, Byzantine princess and author of La Alexiada; Trótula of Salerno, the great medieval scientist; Elisava, the embroiderer, Romanesque artist; Leonor of Aquitaine, the great queen; Claricia, illustrator or Guda of Weissfauen, illuminator of manuscripts and miniaturist, who are some of the outstanding figures of this century. We also highlight Hildegard's influence on the Benedictine nuns of Gerona, who wove the Tapestry of Creation, one of the jewels of Romanesque art, inspired by her theological ideas.
