Jūratė Stauskaitė is one of the bright artists of the “female” generation (Saulė Kisarauskienė, Danutė Jonkaitytė, Danutės Gražienė) who made her debut in the 1980s and has brought a strong charge of emotionality to Lithuanian graphics by means of a metaphorical language full of ambiguous symbols instead of stylized folk. In her search for a unique style, the artist was influenced by the expressionistic tendencies of Lithuanian art, especially the works of painters Ričardas Vaitiekūnas, Arvydas Šaltenis, and Mindaugas Skudutis. To express her ideas, Stauskaitė usually uses an etching and a brush or pen, which has added to art a dose of fresh romanticism. Many of the painter’s creative impulses were inspired by literature and participation in national and international exhibitions.
Stauskaitė’s works may be regarded as expressionistic, which is not typical of graphic artists. Her paintings are dominated by motifs of lines and spots, by female-bird themes depicting creatures with female bodies, bird heads, and wings. The figures are free, as if fixed in motion, and rich in symbols.
This is what Jūratė Stauskaitė says about herself:
“I am an artist, a “graduate” graphic artist. Today, I prefer an authentic drawing. The drawing is a cardiogram of the artist, it most accurately describes the powers and disabilities of the creator. I do what I find interesting, what yields itself to my knowledge, what is dear to me. In my works, flying bird women exhibit the relentless dance of their souls. There’s more of me there than in my life. I try not to lie. Life just GOES ON. And takes me along. I only need to watch and marvel.”
