Contexto de creación femenina

Despite having been born in difficult years, during the Franco dictatorship, in which women's access to scientific careers was not easy at all, Montserrat Soliva managed to generate a new and unprecedented line of research within her field of work. Similarly, we can highlight María Jesús Prieto-Laffargue, an engineer who works in Geostrategy as an analyst of technological intelligence and competitive engineering; the mathematician Pilar Bayer Isant, who has worked on topics such as zeta functions, automorphic forms, the inverse problem of Galois theory, Diophantine equations and Shimura curves; and, finally, Anna Lluch, a Spanish doctor and researcher in oncology, specializing in breast cancer

Reseña

Montserrat Soliva Torrentó received her doctorate in Chemical Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. After working for six years in the chemical-textile laboratory of artificial fibers of the SAFA company, she devoted another thirty years to teaching at the Higher School of Agriculture of Barcelona (ESAB). There, she developed her career as a researcher and specialized in the subject of composting, which she approached from a markedly environmentalist perspective. Thus, she ended up directing more than 150 projects on this subject, made numerous scientific and outreach publications and offered advice on the matter to different companies and public administrations.

Actividades

Justificaciones

  • She is considered one of the highest state authorities on the subject of composting.
  • In 2012, she received the Environment Award from the Government of Catalonia for her almost four decades of research and teaching work in the fields of agriculture and the environment.

Biografía

Montserrat Soliva Torrentó was a Spanish scientist born in Torres de Segre, Lleida, in 1943. In 1964, she graduated in Chemical Sciences, which allowed her to end up directing the laboratory of the SAFA textile company in Blanes until 1970. Six years later, she obtained a doctorate from the Institute of Fundamental Biology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and that led her to work as a professor at ESAB for 32 years. She was appointed Professor of Chemical Analysis in 1989. As for her research work, she focused on the subject of composting and the recovery of organic waste. She defended composting as a way to increase agricultural productivity, but also as a technique that contributes to preserving the environment, as reflected in her numerous publications on the subject. All her effort was recognized in 2012, when the Catalan Generalitat awarded her the Environment Award for her research career. In September 2019, she died in Blanes, a victim of cancer.
