Observacions i context
- Before introducing the character of Jackie Ormes, some questions are asked in class related to comics.
- Then, in groups, students are shown a series of comic strips (the images can be projected on the screen or on laminated drawings that are passed around the groups) so that they can guess what the message is in each strip. On a sheet of paper they should write the theme of each drawing (migration, racism, low pay, unfit working conditions....).
- Introduce the characters and their creator Jackie Ormes (1911-1985).
- It is important to give a reference to the time in which they were made and the two sisters who appear: Patty-Jo and Ginger.
-Patty-Jo, the little and savvy sister.
-Ginger, the older sister, a fashion-forward pin-up girl.
Among the earliest known female cartoonists were:
-Rose Cecil O'Neill (1874 - 1944) was an American illustrator, artist and writer, creator of the popular Kewpies comic characters.
-Mary Williams, better known by her pen name Kate Carew, (1869-1961) was an American cartoonist and journalist who was known for her illustrated interviews with celebrities in the New York World. She was known for being "the only woman cartoonist" of her time.
-Other women cartoonists :
Marjorie Liu (1979-), is a successful novelist who has also positioned herself over time in the world of comics, becoming closely associated with the X-Men, and Wolverine, from tie-ins such as Dark Mirror.
Sara Pichelli (1983-), created Miles Morales, in Ultimate Spider-Man.
3. Gail Simone (1974-), Birds of Prey, Secret Six or Deadpool are some of the titles she has worked on, with even more success writing Batgirl or Red Sonja. But in addition to her work "in" comics, it is worth mentioning her work "on" comics, actively participating in a campaign to give more relevance to secondary female characters.
4. Amanda Conner (1967-), has left her mark on Power Girl fans, in addition to her success in Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre.
5. Louise Simonson(1946-), is one of the most renowned American comic book artists, having worked for both Marvel and DC Comics. Her work as a scriptwriter includes Superman, Spiderman and X-Men strips (among others), with more than 40 years of work in the industry.
6. Kelly Sue DeConnic (1970-), writes and edits comics, doing great work on Avengers Assemble and Captain Marvel.
