Observacions i context

Depending on the level of the class, it can also be used in 1st ESO. It is intended for 2nd grade because of the complexity of the vocabulary.
In class it can be used to reflect on traditions or superstitions in different cultures, e.g., during Halloween.

In Ancient Egypt, the medical function was governed by a strict organisation, like any civil servant in the Pharaonic state. Physicians started from the generic title of swnw or physician. Therefore, if they rose through the ranks, they became the chief or head physician; and at the top of the scale: inspector or director of physicians. The role of Egyptian women as therapists is reflected in tomb paintings, where women can be seen attending a birth.

Women in ancient Egypt had freedoms that they did not have elsewhere. Furthermore, it is known that the people of ancient Egypt worshipped goddesses such as Yuy, for getting pregnant; Hequet, to assist in childbirth; Shepset, to assist in childbirth; Mesjenet, protector of childbirth; and Bastet, protector of possible complications afterwards.
We cannot know if Peseshet was the first female physician in history, because there will be many that we simply have not discovered yet.
In Ancient Greece, there was a law prohibiting all women from practising medicine and obstetrics. However, there is a story of a woman, called Agnodice, who was forced to disguise herself as a man to go and study with Herophilus of Chalcedon, the famous physician and anatomist of Alexandria.
 - The Hebrew Bible, although not considered an entirely reliable source for historical events prior to the 7th century BC, refers to midwives in Exodus 1:15-16:

The king of Egypt also gave a command to the midwives of the Hebrew women: when you attend the Hebrew women, observe well the two stones ...

Descripció

This can be both a review activity of the present simple and a good Listening and Writing exercise.
First, students will watch and listen to a video about Peseshet, an ancient Egyptian doctor. Then, they will complete the text with the missing verbs in the present simple tense. Finally, they will work on the more complex vocabulary in the text and answer comprehension questions about the video and the text. It can take about 20 minutes.

The aim of the activity is for the students to be able to recognise the present simple tense in an oral text.
Comprehension, production and co-production of oral, written and multimodal texts, short and simple, literary and non-literary.
